Attack on ThunderClan

BlackPaw paused. "My name is DarkStorm," he lied with a straight face. "I was here on a mission to see what your defencive skills are like and how you'd act in an emergency attack." He improvised. He sat down and flicked his tail as if to say 'There, I have a reason now let me go'.

Silverwind was not convinced. "You were watching kits earlier..." she muttered under her breath. "Who sent you, 'DarkStorm'?" she asked the cat. She watched his body language carefully for any tell-tale signs of lying. She shuffled, getting more balance on the branch.

BlackPaw took a deep breath. "You see, I've never had kits," he said sadly, trying to fool Silver. "I was merely admiring your clan's dear kits." He lay down steadily on the branch, head on paws, trying to make Silver feel sorrow for him.

Silverwind flicked an ear and shuffled her front paws, causing a leaf to fall gently to the ground. It looked a long way down. She nodded awkwardly. "I'm sorry to hear that." she meowed. She licked her lips uneasily. "Still, you didn't answer my question. Who sent you on this 'mission'?"

"It was my father," BlackPaw said. "His dying wish was for me to follow in his footsteps and be an emergency tester as he'd call it." BlackPaw looked down where WhiteStar was still sitting, looking up at them. He looked back at Silver. "Can I go now, then? The branches are whipping me in my face because of the wind."

Silver flexed her claws and flicked an ear. It was uncomfortable sitting like that for ages, and she hoped Whitestar had heard her and was hurrying. "No. You cannot leave." she said bluntly. "Creeping into Clan territory is foolish and dangerous, and likely to get yourself wounded or even killed. Besides..." she licked a paw and felt the branch wobble in a strong gust of wind. She clung on tightly until the wind had passed. "It's not up to me. As a mere warrior (Silverwind was lying so as to not put herself in danger), it's not my duty. Whitestar will decide what we should do with you. Our deputy, Frozenpelt, is away on a patrol right now, and won't be back until sunhigh." there were a few hours left until sunhigh. Silverwind lied coolly and calmly, not letting a single hair give her away.

"Lies!" WhiteStar spat leaping from limb to limb with swift accuracy before reached the branch they stood on. Silver stood at the beginning of the limb keeping it intact while WhiteStar stood in the middle. Many warriors stood below ready to attack. "I've seen you before. I saw you at a gathering once and I remember your name...BlackPaw isn't it?" WhiteStar mewed, stepping forward once causing the branch to twich uneasily. "I heard you were exiled after killing a kit." WhiteStar continued, with yet another step forward. The branch began to creak.

"Fool!" BlackPaw yowled. "You're going to kill us all! Get off the branch!" BlackPaw stood up immediatly, tryng to keep balance. The branch creaked again and he heard a crack near the trunk of the tree. "Get back!" he yowled at them both. He leapt up to the next branch and began to slowly climb down the trunk back to the same branch as the other two. The branch cracked and was merely hanging on a limb.

Silverwind darted forward and jumped in front of Whitestar. She shoved the white tom back up against the trunk, behind the break so if the branch fell he'd be safe. She looked over her shoulder at WhiteStar and Blackpaw and smiled that her leader was safe. The branch gave way. Silverwind let go, knowing it would not help her to hold on and she'd die if she hit the bottom anyway. She closed her eyes with a slight, satisfied smile on her face. She didn't want to see the scared cats below her. She had done her duty as a deputy - she had protected Whitestar. She let herself fall, blind and deaf to the yowling ThunderClan warriors below her.

Hawkfire opened his eyes. He was lying in the dust, still facing the tree. He sat up and started to clean his wounds when he heard a loud snap and the sound of cats gasping in horror. Hawkfire ran to where the sound had come from, soon finding himself at a large tree with Whitestar and a rogue on top of it. He followed Whitestar's gaze and Hawkfire's eyes landed on a silverish body lying limply on the ground. "Silverwind?" he said, walking up to her. Hawkfire looked at the rogue again, his eyes full of rage. He knew he couldn't climb the tree; not a single branch would hold him up. So Hawkfire shouted, "You can't stay up there forever! You'll have to climb down here to get food! And when you do, I'll rip your ugly face into aa million pieces! So if you know what's good for you, you might wanna just jump off your limb and hope you'll die from the fall!" Hawkfire sat patiently next to Silverwind, wondering if the rogue would realize he was serious.

Silverwind had landed on the floor. She painfully opened her clouded eyes and saw Hawkfire sitting and spitting at the intruder. She smiled. And coughed. She had landed in such a way that she had broken her hind left leg, and had a nasty cut on her cheek. But she wasn't dead, she realised. "StarClan..." she whispered to herself, "StarClan has saved me" she reached out with a forepaw and touched Hawkfire's elbow. "Thanks for coming." she meowed. Silverwind half-closed her eyes because of the throbbing pain and a strange tiredness took over. She had heard that one shouldn't fall asleep when in a bad condition - when StarClan was waiting to call you into Paradise. She stayed awake - barely, and watched the strange, black-pelted cat for any signs of hostility.

BlackPaw leapt down from the great height of the tree after jumping down a few branches. He snarled at HawkFire. "Just leave me alone," he mewed softly at him. BlackPaw sat beside SilverWind. "Come on, you can make it," he mewed in her ear. "You can do it, just stay with me." He licked her broken leg and looked at Silver who was looking at him suspiciously. "When you're better, I need to talk to you in private."

Silverwind glared at the tomcat as he padded over to her, ignoring Hawkfire's threats. "It's cowardly for a cat to attack another while she's down." she winced as the stranger licked her injured leg. She looked away. "If you're going to kill me, or start another fight, you might as well just get it over with." she looked aweay and firmly lay her chin on the ground, glaring into a tussock of grass.

"When you're feeling better, I need to talk to you in private." Blackpaw mewed into her ear.

Siverwind flicked it in his direction and shifted her gaze without moving her head. She looked at Hawkfire, who was bristling in rage. "Hawkfire, let him alone a minute." the medicine cat, who had been tending wounds from the battle against the BloodClan, dashed over with a mouthful of herbs and small objects. She sat down near Silverwind, shoving Blackpaw out of the way, and began healing her.

"You're lucky." the tortoiseshell cat sighed with relief. "Your leg is broken, and your insides are only a little bruised." she looked kindly into Silverwind's anxious eyes and mewed happily, "You'll live." Silverwind smiled slightly and turned back to Blackpaw.

"Make sure WhiteStar knows." Silverwind nodded her head in the direction of the large white tom sitting high in the tree. "You can visit me tonight at moonhigh. I will be in the Medicine cat's den, and if anything is said or done to hurt ThunderClan..." she trailed off menacingly.

The little patched medicine cat helped Silverwind to her feet and they hobbled towards the Medicine cat. Silverwind looked behind her to the worried cats standing below the tree with their ears down in distress. "Thanks for worrying." she said gratefully. It was nice to know some people cared. They disappeared through the braken tunnel and into the clearing near the Medicine Cats' den.

BlackPaw trailed behind them, about 20 fox-lengths after SilverWind and her companions. He held his head low. *I have to tell her* he thought to himself. *She needs to know the truth.* He held his head up high and watched the ThunderClan cats help SilverWind to the medicine cat's aid. "Silver!" he called. "I'll speak to you after dawn." He then lay down in a pile of fresh leaves and fell asleep.

Silverwind nodded and and curled up in the den. She fell into a fitful, shifting dream, and all the while the Medicine cat tended her wounds.

BlackPaw woke up at the crack of dawn. He stood up and stretched his long limbs. He padded closer to the ThunderClan and peered around a tree trunk, at the entrance of the camp. "Silver?" he mewed, approaching the camp, hoping to find her. "Silver? Are you awake?"

Silverwind snapped awake. Her leg throbbed painfully and the medicine cat was still asleep. She looked out into the half-light and as her eyes adjusted to the change in light, she saw first a shadowy silhouette and then the clear view of BlackPaw. "Come in, BlackPaw." she said. She medicine cat shifted in her sleep and Silvewind licked her sore leg, which was bound between two strips of stiff bark to help heal the bone.

BlackPaw entered the den in which lay a still SilverWind. He sat down beside her, towering over the cat. He looked down from his great height at the grey warrior. "Hi," he mewed uneasily, shifting his weight from one hind leg to the other. "Um, so, how are you doing?" he asked, scratching himself behind the ear.

Silveriwnd shifted her head, staring blindly into the burning embers of the rising sun. "Better. Our medicine cat is very good." she looked at the black tom. "Sit down." when he had done so, she said, "What did you want to talk to me about? I guess it would be important, for you stayed the night in hostile territory."

BlackPaw lay down beside SilverWind. "There's...there's something you should know," he said. "It's about...us." BlackPaw paused to lick his paw and clean his head. "It's just that we..." he took a deep breath. "What you didn't know, is that we are...brother and sister." He looked at SilverWind's amazed face. "I used to be in ThunderClan, like yourself, but was kicked out. I was the one who killed that flamekit. I'm sorry..." tears began to stream down his green eyes.

Silverwind raised her head, puzzled. She noticed that Blackpaw was shifting nervously and bristled slightly. "What about..?" she said when he began. She listened patiently, and her eyes grew wide when he told her everything. She thought back, way back. As a kit she had hit her head and lost some of her memory, and could only faintly remember playing loudly in the training grounds and the braken tunnels of thunderclan with several other kits. In her memories, a small, slim kit had always seemed more...important to her. "It's OK." she meowed, licking Blackpaw's paw - the only thing she could reach from her place in the den. "I believe you. Strangely enough, I do."

BlackPaw stared at Silver, amazed. "Do you...do you realize who FlameKit is...or was?" he asked. Silver nodded. "So you know that he was...like...our brother?" Silver froze and nodded stiffly. "I'm so sorry," BlackPaw mewed softly. Another tear trickled down his black, furry cheek. "I...I was so young...I didn't understand what I was doing." BlackPaw looked away from SilverWind in shame. "You don't deserve a brother like me." BlackPaw stood up and began to walk away.

Silverwind hissed sharply, causing Blackpaw to stop abruptly. "Flamekit is alive." she said slowly. "He was from RiverClan, given to them along with his sister by us in a truce after a war. I heard that during a play-meeting between most of the clan kits when I wasn't there, you killed Flamekit." she paused, trying to make as much sense as possible. "But soon after that, there was that war between ShadowClan and RiverClan. ShadowClan took Flamekit and raised him in their clan. Flamekit is now..." she looked into Blackpaw's clear eyes. "He is FlameClaw, the ShadowClan deputy. He is also the brother to ShadowStar, which makes her also our sister." she licked her chest fur. "I always knew there were four of us in our litter, but I never dreamed we'd ever find out who we actually are. Silverwind, ShadowStar, BlackPaw, FlameClaw." she smiled to herself.

"But why did you come and try to attack our Clan? No lies, this time."

BlackPaw stared, eyes wide as Silver told him that his younger brother was still alive. He shook his head rapidly, trying to take it all in. "Why did you try and attack our Clan?" Silver asked. BlackPaw looked down at Silver. "I...had some kind of urge. I sometimes get so angry and feel so trapped that I have to fight it out with something." he struggled to find away to express himself, but then gaave up. "Do any of the others know?"
