Silverwind's Return

It had been a moon since Silverwind had been taken by the Twolegs. All in the camp had proceded as normal, other than the constant search parties. Hawkfire was reminded every day when he woke up and fell asleep that Silverwind was gone. There was always somebody missing in the den. Meanwhile, Hawkfire had been appointed temporary deputy, and led the search parties whenever Whitestar didn't. The number of search parties decreased after about 3/4 of a moon, and soon after they stopped altogether. Hawkfire didn't like being deputy as much as he expected.

It had been about midday, and Hawkfire was eating a plump mouse when he saw some warriors start to crowd around the main entrance. "What's going on?" Hawkfire thought getting up to see what was happening. That's when he smelled kittypet, so Hawkfire took a great leap over the crowd and right in front of what he expected to be the kittypet. "Wha-!" He gasped, looking at the cat.

The cat was the long-missing true deputy of Thunderclan, Silverwind.

SilverWind had tried to slip in unnoticed, but before long cats were all around her. She bent her head cautiously and licked her chest fur. She smelled very strongly of kittypet. Looking up, she stepped backwards as a large cat cleared the fence of cats in one leap and landed in front of her. She smiled, raising her silver-streaked tail.

"Hawkfire!" she meowed happily, "Am I glad to see you!" she touched noses with him in greeting, and sat down. While she was sitting down her thin body was less visible. But there was nothing she could do for now about her unnaturally sleek and shiny coat, or her bright blue kittypet collar with a tag on it. "How are you? I hope is didn't disrupt anything..." she knew it probably wasn't easy when a clan member went missing - even if an apprentice got lost in the forest and had to be sought out.

She looked down at the tag on the leather cat collar. She couldn't read human writing - no cat could. "The twolegs kept calling me Silver." she said. "I guess that's not too bad." her real name was SilverWind, so Silver wasn't too far off for a kittypet name. She tugged at the collar. "I'll get it off soon." she mumbled.

Looking around at the warriors and kits gathered around her, she walked forward. "Let's go to the leader's den, where it's quieter." she whispered to Hawkfire. Passing through the confused cats with her head held high to show that she wasn't a scared little kittypet, she walked over to Whitestar's den. "Come on." she called to her friend.

Hawkfire couldn't believe he was seeing Silverwind. "You're finally back..." Hawkfire said, following Silverwind to the highrock, making angry faces at cats who tried to follow, though he was actually happy. When they reached the leader's den, Hawkfire poked his head inside the den. Seeing Whitestar asleep, Hawkfire poked him until he woke up. All of a sudden, Hawkfire yelled, "Silverwind is back!"

WhiteStar slowly opened his eyes, still in deep thought even when asleep. "Stop toying with me. SilverWind will never be ba..." he began to mew, being cut-off as he saw SilverWind standing beside HawkFire with a Kittypet collar around her neck as well as the scent of twolegs that filled the den. "SilverWind!" he mewed, joyously padding forward and touching noses with the ThunderClan deputy in greeting. "Welcome back." he meowed, silently thanking StarClan. The kittypet life was no life for a ThunderClan cat. Even though WhiteStar had been born a kittypet.

Silverwind smiled happily and touched her nose to Whitestar's. "Yes, I'm back." she replied happily. She was glad to be back where she belonged - in ThunderClan. Not some kittypet home with twolegs that pulled your tail and ears and didn't leave you alone for ages.

"Since your back Silverwind, you are now the deputy again. I had to take the role as deputy." Hawkfire said. "And did the twolegs starve you? Let's go get something to eat." Hawkfire padded over to the fresh-kill pile and took 2 plump mice. "One for you, and one for me." Hawkfire would normally share, but he was so big, he needed all the meat on a mouse as he couuld get. Hawkfire was concerned about what the twolegs had done to her. He guessed the Twolegs made her eat slop, stuck little needles into her, and sleep on their cold, flat rocks Twolegs have in their nests. "So? Did the Twolegs take you to the vet? If so, you should see the medicine cat."

Silverwind laughed and followed Hawkfire out to the freshkill pile. "They didn't starve me," she said, "It was just kind of impossible to eat the stuff they put in front of me. Sometimes it would be sticky and warm - and that tasted okay, but sometimes it's this awful dry cubes of stuff. It smells really nice, like some kind of bird, but it tasted of crowfood." she took the little fat mouse and pinned it to the floor while she tore at it. "I've never appreciated real food so much!" she joked.

She paused after eating, a thoughtful look on her face. "They did take me to the white-coat." she said slowly, "Twice. The first time was almost right after the monster hit me. On the second - quite soon after, they stuck their little needles into me and put this collar on. Then something happened and I was asleep..." she licked her chest-fur. "I hope they didn't put that thing into me - they call it a mi...micro...a microchip? Something like that. I talked to a few of the other kittypets who came into the twoleg's mini-forest, and they said that twolegs can find you if you get lost if you have the microchip in you." she brushed a paw across her ears and sat down. "I'll go and see the medicine cat at moonhigh." she decided.

"In that case they could track you here." WhiteStar mewed, choosing a plump vole from the fresh kill pile. He had refused to eat for the past few days that SilverWind had been missing and he was starving. His ribs were very visible and he smelled terrible as well as had roughed up fur. It was now visible in the sunlight. He picked off some of the meat of the vole and soon all that was left was the voles skeleton. "If they do come, we will fight them off." WhiteStar meowed, with the wisdom in his voice that had been absent for so long. He slowly cleaned himself.

((I just got the entire box set of The New Prophecy from Barnes N Noble today and I'm about to start reading it.))

SilverWind smiled. She had missed her old friends. WhiteStar wasn't looking too well, and his ribs were showing plainly through the fur and he looked like he hadn't eaten for days. "But we have the Gathering to go to now, don't we?" she said, before cleaning herself carefully and rubbing the collar against a tree trunk. She frowned as it didn't come off. "It'll come off sooner or later." she said to herself. "I'll just wear it down." she looked at the others. "The Gathering is tonight, right?" she checked.

"Yeah. We should leave right away." WhiteStar mewed.
