Shadow walked through the long reeds, the evening sun on her back and making her dark coat shine in the warm light. She came to the nursery and walked inside. She nodded her head politely to one of the nursing mother she-cats, but received a nasty hiss in return. The mother, with two kittens with unopened eyes, laid her ears flat against her head and curled her tail around the kits defensively, hissing and spitting with fear in her eyes.
Shadow drew back in surprise, and continued walking. She kept her head and tail down, looking at the ground as she walked. She knew why the she-cat had done that. The mother had been scared. Of her. She could see it in the mother's eyes. They said, 'Shadow is strange. Shadowfang doesn't belong here.' Shadow bared her fangs at the earth. She didn't know where she came from, where she belonged, or why. It was true. She was different to other cats. Found in Riverclan as a newborn kit, Shadow never knew where she had come from. Her eyes were different than other cats, as were her fangs, and her markings were not of Riverclan origin.

As a kit she had tried going off on her own, but as soon as she got to the border...something inside held her back. But now Shadow could leave if she wanted. There was nothing tying her down, or holding her back this time. But...she couldn't do it alone. With foxes, twolegs, dogs...strong as she was, Shadow would not survive out there on her own.
She turned a corner, and was surprised to see a small kit, an Egyptian Mau, alone in the nursery. It was a female, Riverclan kit, and Shadowfang stood watching for a few moments. The kit was tossing a Mossball to and fro, with a sad air about her. It was obvious the cat was lonely. Shadow smiled softly...
